What Does It Mean To Have A Portable Career? Prepare With Mycaa Military Benefits
The Department of Defense recently resumed the MyCAA military program – military spouses with existing MyCAA accounts once again have the ability to use MyCAA military benefits to prepare for a high-demand, portable career. “Portable” is often used to describe the ideal military spouse career, but what exactly does it mean? Webster’s Dictionary defines portable as: “capable of being carried or moved about.”
As a military spouse, you are often required to move from one place to the next. As you use your MyCAA military benefits to plan ahead for a sustainable, or movable career, here are some guidelines to help determine what it means to have a portable career:
Prepare for a career that doesn’t require you to stay put: You don’t want to have your career tied to one location, especially with your uncertain military lifestyle. As you plan for your future career, make sure that you plan ahead for a career that can be applied to opportunities in another location. A career as a shop owner or worker will not translate to high job potential if you move. Additionally, if you become certified or licensed in a specific place, you may not be able to continue this career if you move, or you may have to return to school. If your career is something that will require you to remain in one place, you might want to re-think your career options.
Build a skill set that is needed everywhere: As you prepare for your career, you should consider a career that is going to be in demand nationwide – meaning a career that you’ll find in almost every community across the nation. This will ensure that you have the opportunity to find employment when you are required to move.
An example of such a career is real estate salesperson. With homeowners making the decision to sell their homes virtually every day, you have an opportunity to join a field that needs professionals in any type of market – real estate is an accessible career that enables you to work from a home office or out in the field on a flexible schedule. Plus, with many states having reciprocal agreements for recognizing and granting licenses if you have a real estate license from another state, you can easily transfer your skill set when you move to a new state – a plus for military spouses!
Say goodbye to the job, start a long-term career: A job is something that is usually temporary or short-lived, while a career provides a more permanent, long-term opportunity. With your goal to build a portable career, you need to plan ahead for a career that can move with you when you have to re-locate. As you move to a new city, you want a career that will be needed and in-demand for years to come. Having a career in a high-growth, high-demand field will enable you to keep your career on track and not have to return to school every time you move. With your existing MyCAA military benefits, you can get portable career training that truly travels with you wherever you go and build a future that includes a long-term, fruitful career.
Make the computer an integral part of your career – Looking for a career you can do from home, in almost any location? An ideal way to create a portable career is preparing to work from home through your computer. In this case, you can literally take your job with you from one place to the next, even possibly without having to change employers.
Consider medical transcription – this is a portable career that can be successfully completed from home, on a full or part-time basis. Choose to work directly with a health care provider or transcription service company and complete transcription assignments from your home computer. You can pursue work as a freelance or permanent employee – with all of the benefits of working from home and fitting your work schedule into your busy life.
As a military spouse, it is ideal to prepare for a career that can meet your professional and personal needs as you move from one location to the next. A portable career has many benefits: enabling you to apply your skills to new and exciting opportunities in many locations; providing the skills that are required for a long-term career; and using the computer to open the door to even more career options. If you have an existing MyCAA military account, use your benefits to plan for a portable career that will accompany you wherever you go. That way, if your service member spouse requires a move, you’ll be prepared with a stable and enduring career.
